“As It Is In Heaven” a song? a prayer? Both.

Last night while hanging out with friends we listened to this song.

I love this song for the arrangement and the lyrics, and the prayer it invites.  Search for As It Is In Heaven by Matt Maher for a listen if you haven’t already heard it.

As It Is In Heaven by Matt Maher

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Come and let Your glory come, Let Your glory fall

Our Father who art in heaven, The rocks cry out Your fame
So come and let Your glory come, Let Your glory fall

I will sing, sing a new song, I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song to the Lord

Let Your kingdom come, Let Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven, Every heart proclaim
The mercy of Your name, On earth as it is in heaven

God give us through every morning, Mercy as daily bread
In the name of Jesus, In the name of Jesus we pray

And lead us not to temptation, But deliver us with Your hand
In the name of Jesus, In the name of Jesus we pray
Father we pray

I will sing, sing a new song, I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song to the Lord

Let Your kingdom come, Let Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven, Every heart proclaim
The mercy of Your name, On earth as it is in heaven

For the kingdom is Yours, And the power is Yours
And the glory forever, Amen

For the kingdom is Yours, And the power is Yours
And the glory forever, Amen

Yeah the kingdom is Yours, And the power is Yours
And the glory forever, Amen

Yeah the kingdom is Yours, And the power is Yours
And the glory forever, Amen

Let Your kingdom come, Let Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven, Every heart proclaim
The mercy of Your name, On earth as it is in heaven

This song is amazing.  But what is so amazing about it is that the whole song is about the writer/singer accepting God’s will for their life.  Imagine if every person truly prayed this song.  The world would change today.  Instantly.

Yesterday was the sending off of me from the youth ministry programs at SFA.  It was very nice and the core team, led by their new YM Stephanie, gave me an incredible book of memories that I will always treasure.  More importantly I will treasure my friends from SFA in my heart for ever.  Listening to this song last night was very moving.  I am already longing again to do YM or work with teens or just do something.  But God is clearly calling me to just chill out for a while.  Take a break.  Be a better husband and daddy.  Simply be who I was created to be.  This is God’s will.

This song is a wonderful example of the prayers man can make when he is longing for God no matter what.  No matter my pride telling me I can do anything even at the expense of my health, hehe, no matter my heart longing to work with the teens, and no matter my mind exploding with things to say about God…I am submitting these things to the Cross and to Him who knows me better than I know myself.  This is a painful process.

Often at Praise and Worship I would ask those present to pray this prayer taught to me by a wonderful spiritual director some time ago.  “Lord, show me how you see me.”

Simple, but one of the hardest things to pray in earnest.  To pray that prayer takes authentic humility and authentic vulnerability to God.  It means being willing to see something we may not understand, or believe if possible.

When I pray this prayer God shows me things I never imagined possible.  Roads that I am to walk down that scare me to death, and joys I will experience that I cannot fathom.  The first time I prayed this God showed me I would be married, far from home, and with multiple children.  Funny how this is the only horoscope that has come true in my life.

The hard thing to remember when praying this is as Msgr Buchignani says, we always imagine ourselves doing something in the future as the person we are today.  Who knows who we will be when we get there, and imagine if God could create the world in seven days, what can he do with your life in four years?

So for those of us discerning God’s will for our lives I have this advice.

Sing a new song for the Lord this day.

Let His kingdom come and His will be done today.

He will give us new every morning Mercy as daily bread.

Through Him we have the power

For Him is the glory

Kneel down sometime today with an honest heart and ask God for an ever increasing gift of faith and ask Him to show you how he sees you.  Then stand up and do what He calls you to.  There is no better joy in my life and I pray He anoint you with His Grace and His Joy.  In the peace of Christ may you live His will today.

God bless
